It was clear once the sleeve was removed that this had some nice features. I was curious to check the rod out though, as Pioneer is a brand I’m not that familiar with. The Rod The rod arrived a short time after the reel and I knew it would be a good match, as both are made with light jigging in mind. This is a stunning piece of engineering everything about the Maxel Hybrid 20C reel just oozes good quality. ![]() The reel’s main frame is one piece, machined out of aluminium - but it’s the amount of precision-machined stainless steel components that really impressed me the most. Just prior to my writing this, the reel was dismantled for further inspection and its exterior look of quality was true of the internals, too. ![]() The drag is a star type system and has really nice adjustment with a clicker to help refine this. Once you have a decent fish on, the drag runs super smooth - not surprising, with a good number of drag washers inside the reel. This certainly assists with increased hook ups, and the powerful winding into the fish also sets the hook better. The retrieve ratio is nothing short of spot-on it can be fast-cranked or used much more slowly with quarter winds, allowing you to create different actions. Because the thumb is positioned across the release bar it’s easy to stop the spool, causing the jig to stall as it drops down. It also boasts a cast control system which is probably more designed around casting jigs up-current or ahead of the boat drift and offers excellent control, preventing overruns of the spool that usually cause bird nests in the line. The thumb bar is smooth, yet feels very positive when you’re releasing the spool to lower the jig. The Hybrid reel is perfectly balanced and comfortable in your hand, which makes it easy to operate. I never really appreciated what this type of quality reel provides until my first couple of outings - where it just ate up every bit of punishment thrown its way. Before pulling it apart for close inspection I put the reel through its paces on a large number of fishing adventures, both from the kayak and boat. The exterior finish on the reel is superb and looks beautifully made - but it’s not until you look inside that the Hybrid’s true quality is revealed. It fits around 300m of PE2 braid, and the gear ratio is 6.0.1 which produces an impressive 93cm of line retrieve per crank of the handle. The reel has a classic jigging design but is small, weighing just 378g - yet it boasts a massive 13kg of drag. The Reel Having used predominantly low-profile baitcast-type reels for light jigging in the past it was clear to me that this little beauty was definitely a cut above them in both feel and power. Jean88823 pointed out that breathing was an involuntary activity and if the mind started to concentrate on the activity of the chest muscles moving air in and out of the lungs this could become an obsession. Some posts I found fascinating focused on attempts to alter the patterns of breathing. Although, scientists have found that caffeine stimulates the arousal system, so this could make the yawning worse! Jwarner75 found that cutting down on coffee helped the hyperventilation. They were helped by measures to reduce acid reflux, such as antacids, acid suppression medication such as omeprazole, and raising the head-end of the bed. Others, such as Jenna03097 and Joe93888 wondered whether gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) or hiatus hernia was a cause. Michele29956 benefited from decongestant tablets. Gdepace was helped by a milk-free diet and wondered if it was all to do with mucus in the respiratory system. So what can be done about all this? Some of our posters thought allergy played a part. Melijohn and Kimberley56074 also used the term chronic hyperventilation syndrome, which refers to a long-term condition in which the person breathes too deeply or too rapidly. It often gets better with exercise, which is the complete reverse of true dyspnoea, which improves with rest. This term is used when a person's breathlessness isn't due to heart or lung disorders or any other demonstrable physical problem. He also called it pseudo-dyspnoea, which means false shortness of breath. Mohammed76229 described FlutterbyPie's need to breathe deeply as 'air hunger' and this is a very good description. Unless you want to get me drummed out of the GP Brownies, please don't think you have any of these illnesses just because you get excessive yawning my advice to you is to read our associated leaflets and only seek medical advice if the yawning is associated with other features of these conditions. Rarely, it can be associated with epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, or stroke. The good news is that by and large excessive yawning is not a sign of any serious medical condition. But it does demonstrate what a complex activity yawning is. ![]() Quite what this has to do with FlutterbyPie's problem, I'm not sure. Other research suggests that contagious yawning (yawning when you see another person yawn) is related to activation of the amygdala area (a group of cells low down on the side of the brain). Tests on oxygen levels of people before and after they yawn show no change, and it's suggested that the reason for yawning is actually to cool the brain down. ![]() FlutterbyPie, Excessive yawning and a constant need to breathe deepīoredom induces drowsiness when the brain activates the sleep generating system. If I'm not yawning, I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Excessive yawningįor the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average. In fact, recent research suggests that yawning - a wide opening of the mouth, an involuntary intake of breath, and a short breathing out - occurs when the main source of stimulation in a person's environment is no longer able to sustain their attention. Linda83143l reminded us of the popular belief that yawning occurs when the brain needs more oxygen. ![]() We wish him well in his "semi" retirement. He really fleshed out my education on growing degree days, ag regions of the country such as Western and Eastern Corn Belt, market fundamentals, and of course, weather. I (and many other DTN employees) learned a lot from Bryce. A lot of the guests were farmers, Patti said, so having Bryce sing added to the cool factor. Bryce stepped in and sang at the wedding. Long-time DTN employee Patti Dunaway remembers her wedding 27 years ago when there was a last-minute issue with their soloist. DTN Ag Summit attendees also are well accustomed to being entertained by his pipes at more than a few Chicago dueling piano establishments. He's long been a member of barber shop choruses and lent his voice to many solo efforts. Many DTN customers and readers know Bryce's distinctive voice was not just for newscasts. He has a sharp wit and likes puns - maybe a little too much for my taste! He called DTN Livestock Analyst John Harrington "Sir John of Loin," which I loved as John really was livestock royalty. Once a year we allowed the topic be sports - a college football preview, I believe. Every Wednesday, someone knowledgeable from agriculture, Extension, markets or weather would join Bryce in the DTN studio for an hour-long chat about an ag-related topic. When DTN developers came up with a color satellite unit, Bryce was part of a group of newsroom employees, including current DTN Multimedia Editor Nick Scalise and former newsroom employee Jeff LaGrone, who designed our talk show DTN on Air. And, of course, ag weather itself includes a lot of market analysis: How is this weather likely to affect crops and therefore the markets? There were several times during Bryce's tenure at DTN when he became a market analyst for extended periods. He started writing weather forecasts and commentary but was also a grains analyst when needed. (Shoutout to the Scholtings!)īryce became a full-fledged DTN employee in late 1991, at a time when our news and weather was delivered by satellite to monochrome (green on black or orange on black) screens. And he was no stranger to DTN or agriculture.īryce covered the start-up of DTN, those who founded it and often turned to analysts here to flesh out his farm director reporting. I had been watching him on the local television station for years, as farm director and weatherman. When Bryce Anderson started work at DTN, he was no stranger to me.
